Regional roundup: Salina Central baseball stuns 5A, advances as 16 seed
MAIZE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After barely sneaking into the field with a 7-18 record, the Salina Central baseball team’s season still isn’t done. The No. 16 seed in 5A West, the Mustangs knocked off No. 1 Maize South 12-8 on Tuesday before up-ending Hutch 3-2 to claim a regional title and a trip to 5A state.

Motorcycle Crashes on Interstate Ramp
A Salina man was hurt in a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle at the junction of Interstate 70 and Interstate 135 Friday evening. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 51-year-old Timothy Barr was riding a 2014 Victory Jackpot motorcycle headed east on I-70 exiting onto southbound I-135. He was traveling too fast to make the curve. The bike rolled onto its side, coming to a rest against a guard rail.
Kenwood Cover Preparing for Swim Season
Salina’s Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park is preparing for the summer swim season, albeit a couple of days later this year. Traditionally, Salina’s water part opens on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, weather permitting. This year, for a variety of reasons including staffing issues, Kenwood Cove will open for the first time on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th. Staff training sessions are scheduled leading up to opening day. It takes about 25 lifeguards for Kenwood Cove to be fully open.
Large-scale I Like Ike Button debuting in June
Abilene is adding to its “World’s Largest” collection by adding a button. The Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau is organizing the creation of the World’s Largest I Like Ike Button. The button will debut sometime in June, said Julie Roller Weeks, director of the bureau.
Jerry Ivey Spray Pad Closed Indefinitely
With summer on the horizon, children in Salina have one less place to cool off on a hot day. The spray pad at Jerry Ivey Park is closed indefinitely. According to the City of Salina, the spray pad which has been open since 2008, is closed for an extended period due to repairs needed in the plumbing infrastructure beneath the concrete pad. The closure is necessary to address underground plumbing failures.
Medallion Quest Begins Wednesday
The event which marks the official countdown to the Smoky Hill River Festival is about to begin. The Medallion Quest begins Wednesday. The first Medallion Quest clue will be shared live from the steps of the Smoky Hill Museum at 211 West Iron Ave., at 4 pm on Wednesday, May 15th, by Salina Arts & Humanities Arts Commissioners.
Fe For a Cure Making Changes
A Salina area running / walking event that raised funds for cancer patients undergoing treatment in Salina is coming back for a 9th year, with a few changes. Organizers say Fe For a Cure, one of the region’s most fun, family friendly and affordable running/walking events is making some changes to its format this year. The 5K Race/Walk is adding a 1-mile fun run to its festivities and will move to an earlier 8 a.m. start time on Saturday, Sept. 21.
5A Softball Sub-State to air on KSAL
The 5A Softball Sub-State bracket hosted by Topeka Seaman High School Tuesday will air on 1150 KSAL and 106.7 FM in Salina, and online at KSAL.com. Salina South will open competition as the #6 seed in 5A West, against the #11 seed Arkansas City Bulldogs, in a rematch of a double-header from earlier in the season. The two teams split that competition in April. Action will begin at 3 PM from Topeka Seaman High School.
Motorcyclist Hurt in Crash with Car
Salina Police are investigating an injury crash that sent a motorcycle rider to the hospital in Wichita. Police Sergeant Chad McCary tells KSAL News that just before 5pm on Tuesday evening, 22-year-old Juan Monreal-Esparza was riding a 2007 Susuki motorcycle southbound on 9th Street near the Cloud Street intersection.
