GRINNELL, Iowa — Beloit College’s Buccaneers shook themselves out of a slump to win a pair of games at Grinnell on Saturday, but the host Pioneers took the finale on Sunday.

The Buccaneers won 7-4 and 16-1 in seven innings on Saturday before Grinnell won game three 8-1.

The Pioneers scored twice in the third inning off Beloit starter Kaiya Nishino (3-1) and that was more than enough to knock off the Bucs, whose lone run came on a home run by Jack Alport in the sixth inning. The Bucs collected eight hits and four bases on balls, but stranded 12 baserunners.

Nishino allowed seven hits and five runs in 3 1-3 innings. Tommy Murray worked 2 2-3 scoreless innings, walking one and striking out three before the Pioneers tacked on three unearned runs off Marcus Wilk in his two innings of work.

Taking 2-of-3 left the Bucs 19-11 overall and 12-7 in the Midwest Conference. Grinnell is 13-18 overall and 6-9 in league play.

SATURDAY: A four-run seventh inning by the Bucs wiped out Grinnell’s 4-3 lead in game one. Connor Vogel, Brett Kiger and Evan Zenger hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. Myles Souza lined out to the shortstop, but Nolan Tomsyck walked to force in the tying run. Tyler White also walked to plate another run and Riley Ponio’s single drove in two more for the 7-4 final.

The Bucs collected 11 hits, including two apiece by Alport, Vogel and Souza, whose homer was the lone extra-base hit.

Starter Aiden Phipps picked up the win, allowing seven hits and four runs over six innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Harvey Pena collected a save, allowing only two hits in three scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

Beloit bashed four homers and 20 hits in all in the nightcap. Alport went 3-for-5, hit two bombs as well as a double, scored three times and drove in six. O’Leary was also 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs. Vogel went 3-for-5 with the Bucs’ fourth homer, two runs scored and two RBIs. Kiger was also 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Tomsyck, Zenger and Nelson all had two hits. Tomsyck drove in three runs with a double and a triple. Zenger scored once and drove in two, also hitting a double and triple.

Ben Schweit pitched all seven innings to pick up the win, allowing nine hits and one run. He didn’t walk a batter and fanned eight.

The Bucs head to Appleton Wednesday to resume a suspended game with Lawrence at 1 p.m.
