Midwest League: Cappe's first homer of 2024 helps Beloit sneak past Peoria

Yiddi Cappe hit his first home run of the season in the third inning and Brett Roberts hit an RBI double in the fourth to lift Beloit to a 2-1 win over Peoria in a Midwest League game Wednesday afternoon.

Cappe’s rocket to left led off the third, but the Sky Carp wasted a chance to add to their lead.

Roberts singled after the homer, and Joe Mack hit a double that put Beloit baserunners at second and third with nobody out.

Cameron Barstad walked after a strikeout to load up the bases, but Harrison Spohn struck out for the second out of the inning. The threat ended with Osiris Johnson grounding into a fielder’s choice, leaving Beloit with one run.

The Sky Carp did strike again in the next inning, however, after Ynmanol Marinez started it with a walk. Robert came up with two down and Marinez on first and lined a double into center field to drive in the runner.

Four Beloit pitchers allowed five hits and struck out nine Chiefs. Peoria scored its lone run off starter Jacob Miller in the bottom of the fourth, but Jared Poland and Tyler Eckberg both pitched a scoreless inning to earn holds. Evan Taylor worked the last two innings to pick up his first save of the season.

The teams have split the first two games of a six-game set in Peoria, which continues with Game 3 at 6:35 p.m. Thursday night.
