Long Beach’s “Rocketman” again honored by Los Cerritos neighbors
A new stone memorial was unveiled replacing the stolen bronze plaque honoring Gary “Rocketman” Gabelich at Los Cerritos Park on Thursday November 30, 2023. One of Long Beach's famous hometown champions, among his many accomplishments Gabelich was world famous for breaking and then holding the Land Speed Record for 13 years.

In 1924, George R. Bentel was set to launch his most ambitious auto racing project, the Ascot Speedway, in Los Angeles. After securing a lease and announcing an accompanying amusement project, Bentel was ready to complete the track and schedule races. He sought race sanctioning from the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA), distancing his new facility from the Automobile Association of America (AAA).
