Opinion: Newport’s affordable housing opportunities
Written by Newport City Commissioner Julie Smith-Morrow. For over 25 years I worked with non-profit organizations helping people who were struggling with basic needs. One of those greatest needs is housing, and I believe no one should experience homelessness or live in rundown, dilapidated properties. Providing opportunities for affordable, attainable housing remains one of my critical priorities. This is perhaps the most valuable resource with which a community may assist its residents.

Wilder approves controversial Overlook at Sunrock development
The Overlook at Sunrock development squeaked by the Wilder Planning and Zoning Commission for a zone change and stage one plan approval. Fischer Homes has already begun developing 238 condominium (approved in 2021) units near Bentwood Hills Drive in Wilder but has reapproached the city for a total of 611 units, including single-family homes, townhomes, apartments, condos, and gallery homes. The commission heard the updated development proposal at its meeting on June 10, which passed 4-3 and will now go to the city council for a vote.
NKU approves budget with increased tuition, housing rates
Northern Kentucky University has approved its fiscal year 2025 budget as it chips away at a deficit that hit $24 million in 2022. NKU approved its fiscal year 2025 budget with revenue of $274,430,650 and expenses of $274,334,400. An additional $4,806,250 in expenses were authorized for non-recurring institutional scholarships and discounts for student cohorts before the fiscal year 2023. The reserve use of $4.8 million is non-recurring, and that reserve usage will be eliminated in two years.
