How Cincinnati is embracing its past by restoring historic buildings
Cincinnati lost too many treasured historic buildings to urban renewal in the 1950s through the 1970s, from the Old Main Library to the Albee Theater . Now Cincinnati is polishing up its gems . The more recent trend of renovating and repurposing the city’s notable architecture better preserves the character and history of the Queen City. PNC Tower has been converted into Sky Central Apartments . The old Enquirer Building, with its restored 1920s lobby, houses two hotels. The Gwynne Building just reopened as the luxury Fidelity Hotel . “People like the history of these buildings, and once they’re gone, you can’t recreate it,” said Taylor Vogt, senior developer at Model Group , which has partnered in revitalization projects in Over-the-Rhine, Walnut Hills and Downtown. Incorporating the history of two different eras Vogt was lead project manager on one such conversion project: Model Group’s $90 million transformation of the Mercantile Library and Formica buildings at Fourth and Walnut streets into The Mercantile, a complex with 172 upscale apartments and commercial space. At the same time as the remodel was underway, the historic Mercantile Library on the 11th floor was spruced up with its own $5.3 million renovation and expansion .
