2 women accused of animal cruelty in Belfast

Two women have been accused of animal cruelty after police say they found several animals living in “deplorable” conditions in Belfast.

Monique Kandra, 64, and Rowan Kandra, 25, have been charged with animal cruelty and endangering the welfare of a dependent person, according to the Republican Journal .

Belfast police conducted a welfare check for an at-risk senior at a Belmont Avenue residence on April 10, the Republican Journal reported.

During that welfare check, no one was home and police found animals living in unsafe conditions, with some of them needing “immediate attention,” according to the newspaper. They allegedly left several animals without food or water.

The Kandras were arrested Thursday in Auburn, and police returned to the Belmont Avenue residence on Friday to take several animals to shelters.

The at-risk senior was taken into protective custody, according to the Republican Journal.

The Kandras have been released from the Waldo County Jail on $2,000 bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
