BELEWS CREEK, N.C. — At just 12 years old, Colt Crump likes his toys really big.

“I’ll drive the tractor. I can drive the truck. I drive the excavator, the skid steer … everything,” said Colt, running an excavator to clear land for more flowers this season at his family’s Dogwood Farms.

The popular flower farm attracts hundreds each year.

“He’s always busy,” his father Chris said. “Whether it’s something good or bad, he’s going to stay busy.”

Colt has been busy working the land and big equipment with his dad for as long as he can remember.

“I started carrying him around in a papoose in my tractor when he could barely hold his head,” Chris said. “My dad was a heavy equipment operator. He passed away when Colt was about a year old.”

The family’s popular flower farm has taught Colt a lot of life lessons from selling flowers to bottling honey.

“He’s a kid, but he is an old soul,” Chris said. “There is nothing that doesn’t surprise me, but I got faith in him.”

Dogwood Farms will open on April 27 with acres of poppies, larkspur and native swamp sunflowers.

They’ll also have hot air balloon rides on May 4.
