Report: New York officially launching exploratory committee to consider 2042 Olympic bid

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday will “launch an 88-person exploratory committee to report on the feasibility and challenges of a formal bid to host the Winter Olympic Games” in 2042, according to sources cited by THE ATHLETIC. The potential bid “would see New York City and Lake Placid partner to host.” Sources said that the Lake Placid-New York City Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee “will have an eight-strong leadership group,” which will include Olympic Regional Development Authority President & CEO Ashley Walden as well as representation from the offices of U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). There is “a 16-member sub-committee on finance,” which includes Islanders co-owner John Collins and Mets VP/Business Development Josh Cohen. Yankees President Randy Levine is “one of 12 members of a legal sub-committee,” which also includes NBCUniversal EVP Robert Landau. There are also “18 senior advisers, as well as 16 members of the games operations subcommittee,” which includes Bills minority owner Laura Pegula and Alex Lasry, who ran New York and New Jersey’s FIFA World Cup host committee and whose father Marc Lasry has also joined the operations subcommittee. There is also “an 18-strong community engagement subcommittee,” which includes Fanatics President of Business Affairs Gary Gertzog. All committee members are “working on the project on a voluntary basis, except where it naturally overlaps with their existing day job” (THE ATHLETIC, 10/19).
