March for Northland recruits continues
With strategic initiatives now underway to restore Northland College’s financial footing and set a new academic direction, a lens may reasonably be pointed towards Northland LumberJills and LumberJacks athletic programs — many of which have struggled in recent years to climb up from the bottom of UMAC standings. The cost to offer sports at small colleges and universities appears clear and consistent, and it’s perhaps natural to view sports as an exceptional expense when an institution is struggling with finances. Overlooked, however, may be the...

Working with the weather
A brief conversation about spring weather with any Bay Area coach or athletic director is sure to produce an eye roll and possibly even coax a deep inhale-exhale, but little more. As Ashland Oredockers Athletic Director Brian Miller has remarked many times, unpredictable weather is the norm in the Bay Area. For track and field athletes, baseball players, etc., who are striving to improve their times, leaps, throws, and swings, however, such intrusions pose problems. South Shore Cardinals track coach Ryan Tiberg noted that training this time of year is tricky. ...

The County Deer Advisory Councils are made up of members of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress and up to eight citizen stakeholders representing Tribal, Agriculture, Forestry, Tourism,...

Deb Terry has fond memories of going to Thompson’s West End Park as a child and playing on the playground. The longtime Washburn resident went on to take her kids there, and now her grandkids are playing there, too. As time passed, however, the equipment has worn out and the playground needs to be replaced, she said. ...

Ashland residents face large water rate increase; City officials fight for smaller increase
Ashland residents may see a higher than expected water rate increase in the coming months. The Public Service Commission plans to implement a higher rate increase than the city is comfortable with. The PSC is the regulatory agency for all water utilities in Wisconsin, limiting local control of utility rates. The process for rate increases involves the city filing an application that the PSC then reviews before making an official determination. ...

Shoppers at Walmart may have noticed a new splash of color. A new mural has been installed inside the grocery entrance as part of the store’s ongoing renovation. The artist behind the mural is Amelia Kaiser, who recently moved to the Minnesota north woods from the Pacific Northwest. Kaiser was selected from a pool of artists and given just 10 days to come up with a design and create the mural. Making it more challenging, she said, was that it couldn’t be in the style...
