Road expansions needed for factory projects in Holland and Midland
(The Center Square) – The Michigan Department of Transportation awarded two grant packages to help in road repairs necessary for semiconductor factory expansion and increased traffic in both Holland and Midland. The MDOT Economic Development Fund grant program will be used for road expansions and resurfacing for the city of Holland and the Saginaw Valley Road Commission. Father keeps vigil at bedside of teen son burned by exploding gas can
ANN ARBOR, MI — It’s been nearly a week since his son was engulfed in flames from an exploding gasoline can, and Jared Shoemaker hasn’t left his bedside. “I’m not leaving this, I’m not leaving my son,” Shoemaker said, on the phone from C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor the afternoon of May 16. As he spoke, his 13-year-old son Riley Shoemaker was undergoing surgery to remove dead skin and attempt grafting on cadaver skin.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announcing charges in the death of a toddler who shot himself in the head. It happened Thursday morning at a home on Philadelphia Boulevard in Flint. Leyton said the gun’s owner is the father’s cousin, who was at the home with his brother. The three were smoking before the two cousins left. The gun was left behind. An arrest warrant has been issued for the three men.

Residents still picking up the pieces 4 years after dam failures
MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) - This weekend marks the fourth anniversary of the dam failures that caused catastrophic flooding in Midland and Gladwin counties. Nearly four years after, some flood victims are getting closer to finally having their day in court. Attorney Ven Johnson represents more than 300 plaintiffs in a mass tort lawsuit against the state. He said a court of claims judge told him this week that the case will go to trial next summer.
Populations fall in four of Mid-Michigan's five largest cities
MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) - New population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show continued declines for three of the four largest cities in Mid-Michigan. Flint, Saginaw, Bay City and Burton all lost residents over the past year, according to estimates released on Thursday. Midland was the only one of the largest cities in the region to add residents in 2023.

Saginaw-area sports highlights: Claire Neumann lifts Valley Lutheran to regional title
Valley Lutheran followed senior Claire Neumann to a Division 3 girls track regional title, creating plenty of momentum for the Division 3 state meet. Neumann won the 100 (:12.55), 200 (:26.00) and 400 (:59.60) to lead the Chargers to the regional title Friday at Vassar. Neumann also ran a leg on Valley Lutheran’s winning 800 relay (1:49.17) with Ava Kelsey, Emma Haynes and Mckenzie Derusha.
