Lifewise Academy has been controversial
To the Editor: Regarding “LifeWise Academy director defends program” (Chowan Herald, October 17): LifeWise Academy has been a controversy and has met opposition in nearly every community it’s been brought into. Why? Because support for this nation’s traditional and constitutional separation of church and state is widespread, and often vigorous and persistent. Why did the Edenton-Chowan LifeWise franchise think it would be any different here? There is a long history of protest in Edenton, going back to the Golden Frinks era of the 1960s, recently revitalized by a yearslong Confederate monument protest. I find it unfathomable that local LifeWise officials are surprised by the pushback they are getting. If Bible training for children were seriously the primary point of LifeWise Academy, there’s a much easier, less costly and totally noncontroversial way they could accomplish that: Bible classes before school, after school, on Saturdays or on Sundays. (Anyone remember Sunday school?) The fact that LifeWise rejects these commonsense options reveals that their true goal is disruption and intrusion. Their ultimate aim is evangelical Christianity taught in public school classrooms. Their loudly trumpeted “during-school-hours-but-off-school-property” model exists merely to get their foot in the door. The fact that children participate in this scheme

High school football: Rampants top Bears to remain perfect at 9-0
Twice in the second half Friday night, J.H. Rose’s football team let New Bern get within one score of tying the game. Twice the Rampants had answers to keep enough breathing room — and its perfect season — intact. J.H. Rose got off to a fast start and held off the Bears down the stretch for a 36-22 victory Friday night in a Big Carolina 6A/7A Conference matchup at Percy Daniels Field at Farley-Minges Athletic Complex. The victory assures the Rampants of no worse than a share of the BCC crown. “We had to overcome some adversity, but I thought the guys did a good job offensively and defensively,” Rampants coach Will Bland said. “This is a great win.” J.H. Rose (9-0, 4-0 BCC), ahead 20-6 going into the second half, drove 82 yards in eight plays to start the third quarter. The march was highlighted by a 54-yard run by Tyshawn Bledsoe off right end and was capped by a 2-yard plunge up the middle by Bledsoe for a touchdown, his third of the game. Bledsoe finished with 126 yards rushing on just 10 carries. “It was great,” Bledsoe said. “Great game. I just came back from injury, so

High school volleyball: Area's big 3 roll into fourth round of state playoffs
Another night, another victory — and another sweep — for D.H. Conley’s volleyball team. The Vikings had little trouble beating Jack Britt 3-0 (25-19, 25-17 and 25-11) in the third round of the NCHSAA Class 7A playoffs Thursday night at Rob Maloney Court at Hollywood Crossroads. The victory extended D.H. Conley’s win streak to 19 matches, dropping only four sets in that span. “When it’s the third round, you know it’s going to be great competition coming in the gym,” Vikings coach Jennifer Gillikin said. “We had a really solid practice yesterday. I felt good about our team. I felt like we were prepared. These girls were super focused. They want to keep moving on.” D.H. Conley (22-1), the No. 1 seed in the East 7A bracket, advances to the fourth round Saturday when it will face No. 5 Chapel Hill, a 3-0 victor over Topsail, at home. The Vikings are looking to return to the state title match for a second consecutive season. The NCHSAA title matches are slated for Oct. 30-31 at Gore Arena on the campus of Campbell University in Buies Creek. Leading just 13-11 in the opening set, the Vikings got a kill from Marley Vestal
