Body found near Asheville High School; police are investigating
ASHEVILLE - Police are investigating a body that was found May 9 on a sidewalk near 285 McDowell St., close to Asheville High School's campus. Asheville Police Department officers responded to reports of a possible dead body at 8 a.m. that morning, said spokesperson Rick Rice. BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said a man was recently sentenced after pleading guilty to dozens of charges. Officials said 53-year-old Danny Akins Jr. pleaded guilty to Felony Possession of Firearm by Felon, Felony Breaking and Entering with Intent to Terrorize, Felony Possession of Burglary Tools, Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Felony Larceny, Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle, Felony First Degree Burglary, Misdemeanor Assault on Female, Felony Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felony Injury to Utility Wires/Fixtures, Felony Entering Property to Obtain Non-Ferrous Metals, Felony Chop Shop Activity, and multiple Felony Conspiracy counts.
Rainbow paint vandalism on Beaucatcher Mountain rock face under investigation
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — An investigation is underway after vandals poured a rainbow of paint on the rock face of Beaucatcher Mountain along Interstate 240. Asheville police say officers responded to a call on Tuesday at around 4:26 p.m. of people pouring paint from the top of the rocks, often called "the cut." The property belongs to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Man charged with assault after using American flag as weapon
Asheville Police Department officers arrested a man after he allegedly used an American flag to assault a grocery store employee. Asheville Police responded to Ingles grocery store on Tunnel Road around 1:58 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, for a report of an assault on an employee. The employee confronted the man who was attempting to steal a beverage, according to police reports.
