Abilene Author: Dr. Mark Teague
Growing up, Mark Teague loved math and books, and now he’s turned those two passions into a book on lessons learned from a career in the financial world. “A Working Man’s Guide: Strong Values, Strong Life, Strong Legacy” is a compilation of experiences and the lessons they taught him from both his career and his personal life, including his wife, Melissa, four children and 11 grandchildren. It was partly due to conversations with his family that led to Teague’s book emphasizing the working class, “the heart and strength of the nation.” Teague believes Americans have strayed from the working class ethos and hopes his “Working Man’s Guide” will lead them back.

This Forgotten Texas Ruin Is Worth the Trip
Out in the windswept prairie north of Abilene sits a cluster of crumbling stone chimneys and weathered foundations that tell the story of frontier Texas. Fort Phantom Hill was built in 1851 to protect settlers and travelers along the western edge of civilization, but it was abandoned just three years later under mysterious circumstances. Today, these haunting ruins stand as one of the most atmospheric historical sites in West Texas, offering visitors a chance to walk through history without the crowds or commercialization found at more famous landmarks.

A Revamped Menu and Kitchen Breathe New Life Into This Abilene Joint
Abilene barbecue is going through a transformation. The Shed Market, an honorable mention on our 2021 barbecue list, recently opened a new location on Abilene’s south side, tripling its capacity. Texas Cowboy BBQ on the north side of town is showing off its new dining room and menu after being featured on Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible. And right in between them is Jay’s BBQ Shack, which has had a glow-up of its own and is serving the best brisket I’ve ever eaten in Abilene.
