Explore Local History With Duchesne County History Center Online
The Duchesne County History Center historical photo project continues to interest the community by sharing local historical photos online. The Duchesne County History Center’s Facebook page has grown quickly from a few hundred to over 1,200 followers that can help the History Center identify people, places, events, and things in the photos posted. The History Center keeps an index of each scanned photo with the information that the followers on Facebook provide. “This social media information crowdsourcing quickly provides a large amount of information efficiently and effectively,” explains Duchesne County Library Director Daniel Mauchley. All are invited to participate in this local history effort. Follow the Duchesne County History Center page on Facebook and see if you know anyone in or anything about the historical photos being shared.
Drug Arrest Takes Place After Car/Semi Head On Crash In Duchesne County
An arrest was made following a head on crash on Highway 40 in Duchesne County on Monday. According to Utah Highway Patrol, a westbound passenger car crossed over into the eastbound lanes and hit an eastbound semi. “That spun the passenger car and it hit a second semi that was also eastbound [causing] serious damage to the passenger car,” shares UHP. “The two semi’s weren’t too badly damaged.” The eastbound lanes were blocked and traffic alternated using the westbound lanes. The two occupants in the passenger car were transported to the hospital for injuries. During the investigation of the crash, fentanyl and drug paraphernalia were located in and near the passenger car. The passenger from the car, 28-year-old Brett Hansen, was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance and other drug charges.
Roosevelt Residents Invited to Comment on Proposed Zoning Code Changes at Public Hearing
The Roosevelt City Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. The meeting will be at the Roosevelt City Administration Building. The focus is on proposed changes to the Roosevelt Municipal Code Title 17, related to zoning. The goal is to make the code easier to understand.

Basin Nation Concert Series Invites Instrumentalists
A fantastic collaboration between music programs in the Duchesne County School District and Uintah Basin musicians is almost here. The event includes music programs from Roosevelt Junior High School, and Altamont, Union, and Duchesne High Schools. “The Duchesne County School District secondary music team is so excited about this opportunity we have planned for musicians in the Duchesne County area!” shares the announcement. “We are happy to announce that the Basin Nation Concert Series is back again.” This is the 2nd year for the event and community orchestra and band instrumentalists are invited to come perform with the younger generation of musicians in Duchesne County. Rehearsals are March 11th and 12th at 7pm at the Roosevelt Junior High School and the concerts are March 13th for the orchestra and March 14th for the band.
Felon Arrested On Firearm Charges After Allegedly Shooting At Children’s Feet
A disturbing accusation led to the arrest of a convicted felon in Duchesne County last week. Police were told that suspect Jason Curtis Blair had shot at a child’s feet, barely missing the child. Blair has previous felony convictions and is a restricted person that should not be in possession of firearms. He was out on bail for an arrest on February 1st for Public Intoxication and Aggravated Assault. A search warrant was executed on February 15th and Blair was located leaving the residence in a vehicle. He was ordered out of the vehicle and was detained while the search warrant was executed on the 5th wheel trailer Blair and his girlfriend live in. Inside the trailer deputies found a loaded assault rifle propped against the foot of the bed and a loaded .44 magnum handgun on the side of the bed. A loaded 9mm handgun was also located in the console of the vehicle. Blair was transported to Duchesne County Jail where he was booked on 3 counts of Felony Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person and Driving on a Denied License.

Vernal City Council Approves Final Adoption Of Special Assessment Area 2
The final adoption of a second Special Assessment Area in downtown Vernal was approved this month by Vernal City Council. The special assessment areas establish a system for downtown property owners to help with maintenance costs of public improvements to the walkways and parking lots and the Special Assessment Area 2 includes the Cobblerock block which is receiving major upgrades to the parking lots. The City received protest letters in the fall from 2 property owners for a total of 13 percent of the assessment area, falling short of the 40 percent required to stop the formation of the special assessment area. They also held the required Board of Equalization hearing which had one attendee in protest but the concerns were able to be resolved. Special Assessment Area 2, also referred to as SAA2, received unanimous approval and adoption by the Vernal City Council on February 7th. At that time, Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion shared that the Cobblerock block project’s paving is scheduled for April and is anticipated to be complete in May.

Driver Arrested After Crash On Highway 40 In Duchesne County
A crash in Duchesne County on Thursday evening ended in arrest. According to Utah Highway Patrol, a GMC Acadia was traveling on Highway 40 near milepost 98 around 8:21pm when the crash occurred. It was a single vehicle crash. No other details were provided except that the driver was arrested for DUI.
Driver Cited After Crash On SR45 In Uintah County
A crash on Thursday morning south of Naples in Uintah County involved 4 vehicles but only 2 drivers. According to Utah Highway Patrol, a Ford F350 pulling a car hauler trailer was traveling westbound on 5000 South approaching the SR45 intersection while a GMC Sierra was traveling southbound on SR45 near milepost 37. The Ford did not yield to the stop sign at the intersection and turned onto SR45, striking the front of the GMC. One of the vehicles on the car hauler was ejected from the trailer and landed on its top. The trailer and rear vehicle went through a fence and contacted a power pole, knocking it over. The GMC traveled through a fence and rolled. Both drivers were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the GMC was not transported. The driver of the Ford was cited.

Another Successful Year For Uintah Basin Emergency Care Conference
Real life superheroes filled the Uintah Conference Center over the weekend for training and practicing skills at the Uintah Basin Emergency Care Conference. The conference invites emergency response and care providers from Daggett, Duchesne, and Uintah Counties as well as the Ute Tribe and beyond. “This year we had a lot of hands-on training including vehicle extrication, drones, landing zone training, airway emergencies, and a tour of dispatch,” shares Uintah County Emergency Manager Heidi Lundberg. The conference is also the time for the annual UBECC challenges to see who takes home the traveling trophies in several categories. The Kevin Orr Memorial award was also given naming Sgt. Josh Hill as this year’s recipient. As always, it was a successful event. The save the date announcement has already been given for next year’s conference being planned for February 7th and 8th, 2025.
