Health inspectors flag several Rapides Parish spots
The Town Talk obtained food safety inspection information for the week of Aug. 9-15 from the Louisiana Department of Health. The top addresses with the most critical violations are listed, along with an explanation of the findings. All restaurants on the list had at least two critical violations. According to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, uncorrected critical violations are more likely to contribute to food contamination or illness. Less serious violations are not directly related to foodborne illness but could become hazardous if uncorrected. The Louisiana Department of Health's retail food health inspections dashboard includes a history of each establishment's inspection reports. Inspections should be considered a "snapshot" and might not always reflect an establishment's day-to-day operations and overall condition. Violations fall into two main categories: critical and non-critical. Critical violations are more likely to contribute directly to food contamination or illness if left uncorrected. Non-critical violations are not directly related to the cause of foodborne illness but could become critical if left uncorrected. The DHH dashboard is updated daily; however, there is a seven-day delay between when inspections are made and posted online. Check eatsafe.la.gov for the most recent inspection information available and information on how to

Black cemeteries in Pineville rich in Central Louisiana history
PINEVILLE — The passing years have not been kind to two Black cemeteries that sit side by side on Hunter Street near U.S. 167 in this Central Louisiana town. “As you can see, the graves are in terrible shape,” said local historian and author Michael Wynne. Many graves at First Union Baptist Church Cemetery and Murry Methodist Church Cemetery are sunken in. Fallen tree limbs and vandals have broken headstones, tombs and once ornate wrought iron. Thick vegetation overtook the cemeteries, but it has recently been cleared as best as it could be. Despite neglect, these grounds are rich in history. Buried here are Black people who Wynne said, “have changed the course of local history and beyond for the better.” In August, the City of Pineville and the Pineville Downtown Development District placed a remembrance marker between the two cemeteries and held a program to honor these prominent historical figures. History and the preservation of history is not about buildings, events or geographic sites, Wynne said in his remarks at the program. “Part of our past we’re trying to rectify,” said Mike Tudor, chair of the PDDD during the program. “And rectify that we recognize our African-American citizens who
