BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A shooting outside a Bakersfield convenience store in 2017 that killed a man and injured a woman was gang-related, police said in a court document filed this month.

According to a probable cause declaration, Jemiah Dawson, arrested Friday, and two others carried out the shooting at the front of Tecate Market on South King Street to benefit the Country Boy Crips street gang.

Dawson, 28, was in custody for an unrelated incident when questioned about the Oct. 7, 2017 shooting that killed Maurice Wright. Dawson admitted to being one of the shooters when shown surveillance video of the incident, police said.

Dawson was charged Friday with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy and participating in a criminal street gang. He’s due in court Tuesday afternoon.

Police said two others were being investigated in connection to the shooting. Their names were not released.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111 or Kern Secret Witness at 661-322-4040.
