SPORTS ROUNDUP: SN netters clinch Big East season title

The Southern Nash boys tennis team remained unbeaten in the Big East 2A/3A Conference (10-0) and clinched the regular-season title with an 8-1 league victory over Bunn on Monday.

The Firebirds (10-0 overall) won five of the six singles matches, as No. 1 Frank Gonzalez defeated Elias Brown 6-0, 6-3; No. 2 Alex Underwood 6-2, 6-2 over Jersain Aravjo; No. 3 Luis Robles 6-0, 4-6, (10-5) over Adrian Alema-Gomez; No. 5 Julian Gonzalez 6-2, 4-6 (10-5) over Tucker Mitchell and No. 6 Matthew Coble 6-0, 6-4 over Alex Goodman.

Bunn’s lone win came at No. 4 singles, where Noah Reed edged Gilberto Nunez 6-3, 6-4.

Southern Nash swept doubles as the No. 1 duo of Frank Gonzalez and Underwood defeated Brown/Alema-Gomez 8-1; the No. 2 team of Nunez and Julian Gonzalez 8-0 over Reed/Mitchell and the No. 3 pairing of Robles/Coble 8-6 over Daniel Scoggins/Asher Lee.

The Wildcats dropped to 8-3 in the conference (second place) and 10-3 overall.

Parrott 5, FCS 4

Faith Christian School suffered a 5-4 nonconference loss to Arendell Parrott Academy of Kinston on Monday.

“The two-week layoff really showed today,” said Faith Christian coach Barry Nethercutt, whose squad fell to 6-2 overall.

BASEBALL

BGC 14, SWE 4

A nine-run first inning helped Bear Grass Charter erase a 3-0 deficit and the Bears went on to defeat SouthWest Edgecombe in a nonconference game on Monday in Bear Grass.

Trent Nichols led the Cougars (8-6 overall) with two hits. Adding one hit each were Tyson Ayers (double, two RBI), Derrick Davis, Tyler Mears (RBI), Aidan Knudsen, Nathan Hill and Chase Taylor.

SWE pitchers Hill, Taylor, Jarin Abrams and Brysten Keel combined to allow 16 hits and 14 runs (nine earned) with five walks and two strikeouts.

Bear Grass Charter improved to 13-1 overall.

RMA 6, Kerr-Vance 3

Rocky Mount Academy erased a 1-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the seventh inning on its way to a Carolina Independent Conference victory over Kerr-Vance Academy in Henderson on Monday.

The Eagles improved to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the CIC behind two hits each from Gehrig Miller (RBI), Kaiden Pulley (two doubles, three RBI) and Parker Sherrod (double, RBI). Providing one hit each were Luke Holloman (RBI), Jordan Wright (double) and Seth Tickel.

Tickel earned the complete-game victory on the mound for RMA. Inn seven innings, he allowed just three hits and three runs (one earned) with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

NECP 19, Wayne Prep 8

North East Carolina Prep improved to 6-8 overall by breaking out the bats in Monday’s nonconference win over Wayne Prep in Goldsboro.

The Huskies finished with 19 hits offensively while the defense made no errors.

NECP trailed 5-3 after two innings but tied with with a pair of runs in the third, then added three in the fourth and 11 in the fifth to win by the mercy rule.

Will Anderson led the Huskies with four hits and three RBI, while Andrew Sessoms (two RBI) and Seth Peele (double, two RBI) added three hits each. Collecting two hits were Gavyn Morris (two RBI) and Carson Keeter (double, two RBI) while providing one hit each were Jarrett Warren (two RBI), Tyler Mizzell (RBI), William Burgess (RBI) and Chanen Spain (RBI).

Anthony Cairo went 4.2 innings on the mound for NECP, allowing two hits and four runs (none earned) with eight strikeouts and no walks. Morris added one-third of an inning and surrendered one hit and four runs (all earned) with two walks and no strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

Bunn 29, Rocky Mount 0

The Lady Gryphons fell to 0-8 in the Big East 2A/3A Conference and 0-15 overall after managing just one hit in the league loss to Bunn on Monday.

Reyann Hatu had the only hit for Rocky Mount, which made nine errors on defense and gave up seven runs in the first inning, 13 in the second and nine in the third.

SOCCER

Roanoke Rapids 11 Rocky Mount 2

Rocky Mount’s girls soccer team dropped to 1-3 in the Big East 2A/3A Conference and 3-5-1 overall after a league loss at Roanoke Rapids on Monday.

The Gryphons had no answer for Casey Neal (five goals), Kara Baird (two goals, four assists) and Kamdyn Jean (two goals, three assists).
