AVON N.Y. (WROC) — After going into executive session, Avon Village Mayor Robert Hayes says– police Chief Joseph Geer’s resignation will go into effect this Thursday May 2.

“The village will be reviewing potential candidates to fill his position and in the meantime the police department will continue to be led by Officer Tim Ferrara,” said Hayes.

He says there are details within this investigation that can not be shared however says he feels this is a good decision.

“The village isn’t conducting the investigation. The investigation with the U.S. Attorney’s office and involves the school and officer Geer’s actions there. I think the separation doesn’t really entail that, so we consider separation of employment the right step moving forward regardless of what’s going on with the investigation,” he said.

As for Geer’s position at the school where he was formerly a school resource officer — Hayes says its something they are looking into as well.

“What that contract is going to look like going forward, you know we still have a year left on it. On our primary contract I should say, and the secondary one is just going to have to be a matter of making sure that it’s solid if we have it at all and if we have the staffing level to man it.”

Mayor Hayes says they are hopeful to hear something more on the investigation within the next 2-3 weeks.
