WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — After at least 70 suspected overdoses and multiple deaths from a Travis County outbreak earlier this week, Williamson County shared a “critical warning” with residents Thursday about fentanyl poisonings.

The release addressed the “exceptionally lethal batch of drugs” in the greater Austin area and stressed Williamson County residents need to be aware of the possibility of those circling through the region.

“We cannot overstate the urgency of this situation,” Williamson County Sheriff Mike Gleason said in a release. “The recent spike in fentanyl poisonings in Travis County serves as a stark reminder of the deadly nature of this substance. We must all take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones.”

His office encouraged residents to visit Texas Against Fentanyl for resources and information on fentanyl’s dangers. On the local level, Gleason along with the Williamson County Organized Crime Unit and the Cedar Park Police Department are helping lead the county’s response efforts.
