AUSTIN ( KXAN ) — A Burkburnett man reported missing in south Austin was found dead Friday, the Austin Police Department said in a press release.

Cristian Rangel, 24, was last seen in a south Austin Walmart parking lot on April 8, 2024. APD sent a release on April 18, saying it was searching for him and was concerned for Rangel’s well-being.

Officers responded to reports of a dead person in a southeast Austin neighborhood around 7 p.m. on Friday, April 19, the release said. The man was later identified as Rangel.

A records check on Rangel showed a driver’s license that listed an address in Burkburnett with a matching name and date of birth.

Rangel was a standout athlete at Burkburnett and played baseball for the Bulldogs. In 2016, Rangel was named to the All-District 5-4A team as the most valuable defensive player in the district.

Police said they are considering this incident a death investigation.
