Several Augusta-area church congregations will gather Thursday to symbolize a “great picture of heaven” offering prayers of unity and understanding as part of the National Day of Prayer.

The annual community service will be at 7 p.m. May 2 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 5113 Wrightsboro Rd., Grovetown. The church is pastored by Frank Lewis. The public is invited.

Pastor Sonny Jones of Word of Life Church at Keg Creek will bring the message. That message – “Lift up the Word, Light Up the World” – is the national day’s 2024 theme.

Event co-organizer Jane Wells said “around 10 churches” are involved with the event.

“Several denominations and black and white congregations coming together as brothers and sisters in Christ,” she said. “Great picture of heaven.”

Worshippers will offer prayers for church, family, education business, military, government and arts-and-entertainment media.

This year marks the 73 rd National Day of Prayer. The annual observance was formalized in 1952.
