Athens woman charged with murder after mother’s body found in Rockwood

ATHENS, Tenn. ( WATE ) — An Athens woman has been charged with murder after her mother’s body was found at a Rockwood home over the weekend.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, they were requested to help with the investigation by 9 th Judicial District Attorney General on Sunday, April 21, after a woman’s body was found on April 20.

On Monday, the Roane County Sheriff’s released that an investigation was underway after a woman’s body was found at a home on Circle Drive in Rockwood . The TBI identified the woman as Bertha Lodewegen, 75.

An autopsy determined that the manner of death was homicide, the TBI said.

“During the course of the investigation, investigators determined that the victim’s daughter Marie Hefner was the individual responsible for her mother’s death,” according to a TBI press release.

On April 25, Marie Hefner, 50, of Athens was charged with first-degree murder. She was taken into custody at the Roane County Sheriff’s Office and a bond has not been set at the time of publication.
