New Mexico State Police responds to deadly crash in Artesia
EDDY COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police and the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office responded to a dead crash in Artesia on Wednesday. The crash involved one vehicle. The sheriff’s office said 26th Street will be closed between Compress Road and the Artesia city limits for an unknown amount of time.

Eddy County approves $1M for work at West Loop Road and 62/182
Construction work at a busy Carlsbad intersection was moved up a year due to increased traffic flow, said Eddy County Public Works Director Jason Burns. Eddy County’s Board of County Commissioners April 16 approved a budget transfer of $1 million from the County’s general fund to the road construction fund to start construction at the intersection of Corrales Road and U.S. Highway 62/180 south of Carlsbad.
Artesia man caught breaking into local vape shop; accomplice still at large
One Artesia man has been arrested on burglary charges and another remains at large following a break-in early Friday morning at a local vape shop. Artesia Police Department (APD) officers were dispatched just after 2 a.m. Friday, April 19, to A1 Tobacco and Vape, 1404 W. Main St., in reference to a commercial burglary in progress. Upon arrival, police noticed a ladder behind the business that had been used to gain access from the roof.

Eddy County residents can get to know the candidates running for office during two forums in Carlsbad. All forums are free and open to the public. Republican candidates for Eddy County Sheriff and District 55 in the New Mexico House of Representatives are expected to participate in a forum scheduled for 6 p.m. April 25 at First Christian Church. Those candidates include Matthew Hutchinson, Victor Martinez, Cathrynn Brown and Jack Volpato, according to an NAACP news release.

Wrongful arrest case against Eddy County, Sheriff's Office will proceed
A federal judge declined to dismiss a lawsuit against Eddy County filed by a man arguing he was wrongfully prosecuted by the deputies with the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office. Defendants in the case Eddy County, Sheriff Mark Cage and deputies Jared Rostro and Eric Threlkeld filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in May 2023, which a federal judge on April 10 partially denied leaving the case active in U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.

The Artesia City Council appointed a new councilor for District 4 and elected its mayor pro tem during Tuesday’s meeting at City Hall. Michael Bundt was appointed to fill the District 4 council seat recently vacated by Sam Hagelstein. No candidates ran for the seat during March’s municipal election. Bundt is a former economic development director for the Artesia Chamber of Commerce.
