Under legacy air pollution, Memphis data centers fuel oversight worry
Artificial intelligence is fueling a rapid expansion of data centers and Tennesseans worry about what it could mean for their air, energy use and quality of life. President Donald Trump last month joined tech leaders in signing a "morally binding" AI agreement , which allows companies to perform self-policing of their products and technologies. The accord announced by the White House says participating companies will meet regularly to establish standards and best practices. LaTricea Adams, founder, president and CEO of the civil rights and environmental justice organization Young, Gifted and Green , said Memphis' xAI data center relies on natural gas turbines to power its operations, adding to concerns about air pollution and whether proper permits are being used. She pointed out federal guardrails proposed under the previous administration have been dropped, leaving communities to push for accountability on their own. "It is going to take Congress to be bold and to be brave and to really put the American people first. It's the people with voting power that can say you stay in office or you come out," Adams stressed. Ask Vance: Gartly-Ramsay Hospital
Dear Vance: What happened to the old hospital on Jackson that was demolished to make way for the Salvation Army headquarters? — C.D., Memphis. Dear C.D.: For close to a century, Memphians have been fortunate to have access to medical complexes that can treat just about anything that ails us. Baptist, Methodist, St. Francis, St. Jude, and Le Bonheur immediately come to mind. But for many years, smaller, privately owned facilities treated those suffering from illnesses and accidents. I’ve written before about Collins Chapel Hospital, but others include John Gaston Hospital (now part of UTHSC), Terrell Memorial Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Crofford’s Infirmary, and a dozen others. The largest, and perhaps the most successful of these, was the Gartly-Ramsay Hospital, located at 696 Jackson Avenue.
