Buffalo National River Intermittently Closes Steel Creek Road for Water Line Construction
Harrison, Ark. – Buffalo National River will be installing a new water line to Steel Creek starting on Monday, July 29. As a result, the only road providing access to Steel Creek will be closed from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. Access to the river and campground will be available at all other times, including Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Outdoor Recreation Grant Awards Announced
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, along with Secretary Shea Lewis, Secretary Renee Mallory, and Office of Outdoor Recreation Director Katherine Andrews, presented $500,000 in Outdoor Recreation Grants to projects in seven counties across the state on Wednesday. The Sanders Administration revived Great Strides after the program went dormant in 2017, following a recommendation of the Natural State Initiative. The funding for this grant program comes from Arkansas’ Tobacco Settlement Fund.

Before the advent of social media, racers would exchange stories to motivate and inform each other about the races they had taken part in. These stories would be shared on message boards. Arkansas Ultrarunners at the Western States Endurance Run
This past weekend, three Arkansas ultrarunners participated in the Western States Endurance Run. Erich Washausen of Prairie Grove, Ashley Gramza of Little Rock, and Alex Staten of Fayetteville joined 372 other runners from around the world. In total, 288 runners completed the race. Washausen finished the course in under 28 hours and 54 minutes, while Staten crossed the finish line after the 30-hour cut-off. Unfortunately, Gramza dropped out at mile 78. Washausen and Gramza shared their reflections on the race and the supportive community that made their participation possible.

Water Outage at Steel Creek, Buffalo National River
Harrison, Arkansas – The water system at Steel Creek is currently out of order. The water line has recently developed several leaks making water service to Steel Creek unsustainable. Construction of a new water line will begin in mid-July and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2024.
