Minnewaska State Park will be closed to the public tomorrow, Friday, May 17 due to treatments for spongy moth infestation. The park is slated to reopen on Saturday, May 18. The spongy moth is a non-native insect from France. The caterpillars are known to feed on the leaves of a large variety of trees. Oak is their preferred species, but they will feast on other trees when oak is not available to them or their numbers are in great excess.

GOSHEN – An 18-year-old Wallkill man pled guilty in Orange County Court on Tuesday to criminal possession of a weapon in connection with a Walden shooting. It was alleged that on April 25, 2024, residents of the Village of Walden had engaged in an argument with a relative regarding property they believed was stolen by the relative from their driveway.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. Friday, May 10, in Orange County on Route 211 near Route 17 in the town of Wallkill. New York State Police say that a preliminary investigation revealed that Connecticut resident Mary C. Shea, age 38, from the town of Naugatuck in New Haven County, was walking on Route 211 when she stepped off the curb and into the right lane of traffic when she was struck by a 2017 Ford Escape that was traveling west.

BRONX – A NYPD sergeant from Putnam County accused of throwing a cooler and killing a man last summer in the Bronx was back in court this week. Erik Duran of Mahopac, an undercover member of the NYPD Narcotics Borough Bronx Tactical Response Unit, who faces manslaughter and other charges in the August 2023 death of Eric Duprey, was surrounded by more than a dozen fellow officers as he appeared before a judge.
