Five retire from Franklin Elementary School
Franklin Elementary School recently celebrated the retirement of five of the school’s staffers. Susan Ayers, Kayla Ellis, Donna Fillius, Karen Pruitt, and Sherry Smith will all be stepping down at the end of this school year. Swain County makes history, sweeps boys, girls NCHSAA 1A track and field championships
With only one event left to determine the boys NCHSAA 1A state track and field champions on Monday, Swain County coach Ian Roper was beyond nervous. For the second year in a row, the event was down to the 1,600-meter relay. A season ago, the Maroon Devils were beat out for the race and the state title. This season, despite needing to finish only fourth, the relay team left no doubt, winning the race and clinching Swain County’s first-ever boys track and field state championship.

Campbell Folk School, where she learned to appreciate the mountain makers that came before her. “The Folk School opened the year my grandmother was born, and her father, my great grandfather, donated building supplies in the very beginning,” she tells Asheville Made. “The school has impacted my life in so many ways, and that’s a perspective I bring when I create work, teach, and perform.”
