AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Many local college campuses are preparing for commencement ceremonies this weekend, and there’s an added layer of security. This comes as pro-Palestinian protests have disrupted college graduations in different parts of the country.
UMass Amherst is one of many colleges still choosing to hold its ceremonies this Saturday. The campus has been dealing with pro-Palestinian encampments recently. Police were called to disperse the demonstrations last week, arresting more than 100 people.
A UMass spokesperson, Ed Blaguszewski said in a statement quote, “We look forward to welcoming guests to campus to celebrate the achievements of our students at this year’s commencement ceremonies. As it does each year, UMass Amherst will have security precautions in place for commencement events and will be prepared to address disruptive behavior if it occurs.”
He continued to state, “UMass Amherst stands firmly by the rights of individuals to exercise their right to free speech while also recognizing that those rights do not extend to disruptive behavior that conflicts with the rights of others in attendance to take part in the program, whether as speakers or guests.”
We spoke with the community about the recent protests on campus. “I feel like the college experience is learning how to use your voice and think critically. I think a lot of people aren’t thinking critically and just focused on suppressing free speech. If I was graduating this year and there were protests, it wouldn’t bother me one bit,” expressed Andrew Roberts of Huntington.
The University is reminding the public to be advised of the heavy traffic and street closures that are going to be in effect through Sunday.
