Muscogee County School Board to vote on name of field at Odis Spencer Stadium

The field and fieldhouse at Odis Spencer Stadium will be named in honor of Spencer High School graduate and former NFL player Ernie Green if the Muscogee County School District Board approves the recommendation from superintendent David Lewis and MCSD athletics director Kendall Mills. The board is scheduled to vote on the recommendation during its next monthly meeting, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., according to the agenda . Green graduated from Spencer in 1958 and played as a running back for the University of Louisville. The Green Bay Packers selected him in the 14th round (196th overall) of the 1962 NFL Draft. During the preseason, the Packers traded Green to the Cleveland Browns. From 1962-68, he rushed for 3,204 yards and scored 15 touchdowns, according to profootball-reference.com. He helped the Browns win the 1964 NFL championship. Green was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1967 and 1968 and was elected co-captain of the Browns for both seasons. The Muscogee County School District will have a new principal, a new assistant principal and a new director of a special-education program if the MCSD board approves the following appointments recommended by superintendent David Lewis: Gloria Anna Nevarez Bernal-Askew to be principal of Arnold Middle School Cynthea Applegate to be assistant principal of Blanchard Elementary School Tiffany Collins to be director of the Woodall Program, which serves students with emotional and behavioral disorders that prevent them from succeeding at a traditional school. Mail it early, or don't mail it: what Columbus voters need to know about ballot postmarks

A U.S. Postal Service rule has set off warnings nationwide that mailed ballots could get late postmarks and go uncounted. The rule, which took effect in December 2025 , says a postmark usually shows when a piece of mail is first machine-processed, which isn’t always the day it was mailed. USPS says the rule describes existing practice rather than changing it. For voters, it matters in states that count late-arriving ballots postmarked on time, and in Georgia, for military and overseas voters. Anyone can ask for a hand-stamped ballot, but for most Georgia voters, a hand stamp does nothing. The ballot must be in the elections office by 7 p.m. on Election Day (Nov. 3 this year), and a same-day postmark doesn’t really make the mail move any faster. But it does matter for military and overseas voters, whose ballots count if they are postmarked by Election Day. For a stateside soldier at Fort Benning mailing on Election Day, a hand stamp can be the difference between counted and rejected.
