An "intense line of storms" moving into Illinois from Iowa was set to bring "destructive" wind gusts, brief tornadoes and possibly even hail to the Chicago area Tuesday. Overnight storms brought severe weather alerts to parts of the area during the early morning hours, but the second line moving in was expected to be the bigger threat.

Second Wave of Chicago Storms Poses Fresh Threat Before Midnight
A line of severe thunderstorms moved through the Chicago area Today, prompting warnings across Cook, DuPage and Kane counties until 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The storms first developed over Wisconsin around 11:30 a.m. before reaching the Chicago area around 1 p.m., bringing gusty winds in excess of 60 mph and quarter sized hail in the strongest cells. Counties including McHenry, Lake, Kenosha in Wisconsin, LaPorte in Indiana and Berrien in Michigan were placed under separate severe thunderstorm watches through the afternoon and into the early evening as the broader system moved east. The National Weather Service and local meteorologists warned that heavy rain, damaging wind and isolated large hail were possible with the strongest storms, along with a small chance of an isolated tornado.

Flood fallout continues, National Night Out is here
Institutions around Janesville continue to work in recovery from the April 17 flood that hit Rock County and much of southern Wisconsin. First Lutheran Church has been closed since the flooding - and may never return to its current building with plenty of damage to the facility - but kept its parking tradition for the Rock County 4-H Fair alive. Proceeds were down with a rainy weekend, but the church is thankful to those who paid to park. Meanwhile, the School District of Janesville plans to apply for a FEMA grant to pay for some of the costs of damage to Washington Elementary and other facilities. State and local funds will also contribute. After cyber attacks to water systems in neighboring states, municipalities across Wisconsin - including right here in Rock County - are on the lookout. National Night Out is here. Law enforcement and other public safety personnel will participate in events celebrating community and trust . Do you have a story you'd like the Gazette to follow? Showers chances limited Wednesday evening, patchy dense fog possible
Our rain chances this evening continue to dwindle as a cold front moves across northern Illinois, eventually stalling to our south overnight. There was a line of showers and thunderstorms that developed late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, but the majority of the widespread and heavy rainfall remained to our south. And that’s where most of the rain ended up this afternoon and evening. Outside of a few showers and isolated thunderstorms that developed northeast of Rockford, the majority of the region ended up dry.
