Tornadoes, 70 mph winds threaten Oklahoma Monday: Timings, what to expect

Oklahoma faces a rare but very real risk of strong fall-season tornadoes in Oklahoma Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. The latest NWS forecast warns that in the afternoon hours, severe thunderstorms will intensify as they move toward the Interstate 35 corridor. There is a chance for individual supercells to form, which could produce damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and large hail. By this evening, a line of thunderstorms will begin forming and moving through Oklahoma. As the line of storms passes over central and north-central Oklahoma, they are expected to strengthen enough that a strong tornado or two could form as the weather front smashes into the warm, moist air lingering over the state. Oklahoma City should expect storms to start sometime after 1 p.m. The most likely time for severe weather in central Oklahoma will be between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Once the line passes by, the threat of severe weather drops significantly as cooler, drier air moves in. A severe storm and tornado threat will remain during the overnight hours in eastern Oklahoma. Tornadoes in Oklahoma usually spawn in the springtime, but each year between September and November, the risk of severe weather

Weather Warn Day for Monday due to severe storms

OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — By Monday, our Next Weather Maker will track through Oklahoma. This compact area of low pressure will swing a cold front through the area during the afternoon and evening that could fire of some strong to severe storms. Even though temperatures will be in the upper 70s, we'll have a lot of cloud cover, holding back our instability. This is early November after all, so it is very hard to get the type of instability like we would see in the Spring. But, this low coming through will be quite deep, so we will have plenty of wind shear to work with. In the Second Season of severe weather, these 'low CAPE, low shear' events are what we typically get, and will favor a wind threat and even a low tornado threat. Due to this, SPC has put a 15% Slight Risk over much of our area Monday. As we get into the weekend, we'll be able to iron out the details.
