State grant provides drones for Polk State agricultural program

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a grant of $276,069 to Polk State College for agricultural education during a news conference on Nov. 4. The award of Workforce Capitalization Grant funding from the Florida Department of Education will expand dual enrollment opportunities for high school students to gain hands-on experience in agricultural technology, including the use of drones and other emerging technologies, Polk State said in a news release. DeSantis made the announcement during a visit to Polk State’s JD Alexander Center in Lake Wales. The state funding will help Polk State acquire several unmanned aircraft systems to be used in agricultural programs through the college’s AgriPolk initiative. Students will be able to receive certifications related to drone technology. “So, this is going to be value-added, and Polk State's really going to be leading the charge on it,” DeSantis said during a news conference. “And it's a great part of the state to have this. And I'm really excited that we're able to get that done.” In October 2025, Polk State launched AgriPolk , an initiative that combines the associate in arts degree with specialized coursework, hands-on learning and certification opportunities for students interested in agriculture, the news release said. Incumbent Democrat holds onto redistricted Florida congressional seat

Voters returned Democrat Darren Soto to Congress in the Nov. 3 General Election in a district created by Florida Republicans as a likely GOP win. Soto, of Kissimmee, garnered 50.2% vote to 49.8% for Vero Beach Republican Dan Green, according to final, unofficial results from the seven county supervisor of elections offices in the massive district. The General Election was the first since Indian River County was brought into the redrawn District 9. Florida's 9th Congressional District now covers 5,500 square miles stretching from urban Orlando south to Lake Okeechobee and east to Vero Beach. The district represents all of Highlands, Indian River, Okeechobee and Glades counties, most of Osceola County and portions of Orange County and Polk counties. The district runs from Orlando southwest to Yeehaw Junction, and includes all of Indian River County. It also dips south into the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud, making it one of the largest districts by area in the state. Indian River formerly was in the 8th Congressional District, which stretched from Titusville in Brevard County down the coast to Vero Beach.
