Altamont Girls Playing for A Chance at History Tonight
The Altamont Lady Indians will try to do something tonight that only one other Lady Indians team has done in program history – win a Sectional Championship. Altamont is set to do battle tonight with Salt Fork in the Championship Game of the Central A&M 1A Sectional at 6:00pm. Altamont knocked off Tuscola, 52-37, and Salt Fork took down St. Anthony, 51-42, to advance to the title game. The Storm comes in to tonight 28-5 on the season and winners of their last 19 games dating back to December 27. Altamont is 25-6 on the season and had a 19-game win streak of their own from November 24 to January 18 before going through a small rough patch, dropping four of five games against tough opponents in St. Anthony, T-Town, Paris and Father McGivney, but have since righted the ship in the postseason for a string of three wins to continue their season. Each team has met St. Anthony, Tuscola and Paris this season with Altamont going 1-1 against St. Anthony and Salt Fork beating the Bulldogs in their only meeting on Tuesday night. Altamont beat Tuscola by one point and by 15 points in their two meetings while Salt Fork lost to the Warriors, 54-31. Each team also faced Paris once, as the Lady Indians dropped their regular season finale to the Tigers, 52-42, and Salt Fork got a 56-38 win in that matchup. Altamont comes into the game with a higher scoring average as the Lady Indians have averaged 61.3 points per game this season and the Storm is averaging just 45.4 points per game. The winner of tonight’s game moves on to the Farmer City (Blue Ridge) Super-Sectional on Monday night at 7:00pm to take on the winner of the Colfax (Ridgeview) Sectional between Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley and Cissna Park. Should Altamont win tonight, it would be just the second Sectional Championship in girls basketball program history with the first and only title coming during the 1980-1981 season, which also saw the Lady Indians get the one and only Super-Sectional win in program history as well.

The Indians would get off to a rough start in the first quarter, recording several turnovers, but were able to pull themselves out to a 12-5 lead at the end of the period. The Indians would hit just three shots from the field in the second quarter, but would go 6 of 7 at the free throw line to outscore the Cardinals 13-9 and push their lead out to 25-14 at halftime. The third quarter would be a basket for basket battle as the Indians and Cardinals matched each other with 13 points in the quarter as Altamont maintained their eleven point lead, 38-27, heading into the fourth quarter. North Clay would hit a couple of big three and get some key baskets to go, while Altamont had just four baskets from the field, but once again got the job done at the free throw line, going 7 of 8 from the line in the quarter as North Clay outscored the Indians 19-16, but Altamont closed out the win, 54-46. Altamont improves to 21-8 on the season and will get a chance to try and win back to back regional championships for the first time since 2017 and 2018. Lady Indians Take Down Tuscola to Advance to Sectional Championship
The Altamont Lady Indians used a strong second half to pull away from Tuscola and grab their first sectional semifinal win since 2020, beating the Warriors, 52-37. With the two teams meeting just five and half weeks ago in a tight battle that saw Altamont win by one point, the first half on Tuesday night looked like it may be another close back and forth battle. Tuscola would score first and would score last in the quarter as Altamont trailed 12-10 at the end of the first. The Lady Indians were able to get to the free throw line in the second quarter and outscored Tuscola, 12-9, and put themselves in front by one, 22-21, at halftime. The momentum to start the second half would be all in Altamont’s favor as the Indians were able to force some key Tuscola turnovers and get couple key stops on the defensive end of the floor. Altamont hit a couple key shots from the perimeter and began to penetrate the lane offensively and again got themselves to the free throw line a few times as they outscored Tuscola 14-7 in the period for a 36-28 lead. As they started the fourth quarter, the Lady Indians used their 8-point lead to switch things up offensively, really slowing the tempo down and working the ball around to pull the Warrior defense out. The Indians were able be choosy with their shots and again get to the rim, drawing the contact for a few trips to the line as they continued pulling themselves away. Tuscola would foul to stop the clock late, with the Indians putting the game away at the line for the 52-37 win. Altamont moves to 25-6 on the season as they advance to the Sectional Championship. The Lady Indians will square off with Catlin Salt Fork in the Championship game on Thursday at 6:00pm as the Storm knocked off St. Anthony, 51-42, in the first semifinal game on Tuesday night in order to reach the Championship game.
