Albertville High School has moved on from head girls basketball coach Jon David "JD" Cotten, and has begun the search for a new leader of its girls basketball program.

The news the Aggies were looking for a new coach came out on Monday when a post appeared about the school looking for a coach on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The school confirmed the news to the Gadsden Times on Tuesday.

Cotten will remain on staff at Albertville High School but his two year run as head coach came to an end. Cotten went 20-36 over two seasons and regressed to an 8-19 record this past season and was bounced out of the playoffs in the first round of the area tournament. They have gone 1-11 in area play the past two seasons.

"I appreciate Jordan Phillips and Matt Lambert allowing me to live out my dream as an Albertville Aggie Head Coach. The program is in a good place and has phenomenal talent coming up," Cotten said in a statement to the Gadsden Times.

Cotten was a 1997 graduate of Albertville and played basketball from 1993-97. He spent the six seasons prior to 2022 as an assistant on the girls team. He was the junior varsity head coach for five of those seasons. The Aggies face a tough test in Class 7A, Area 7 especially with a wealthy of Huntsville area schools.

“JD Cotten will not be returning for the upcoming season. We want to express our sincere gratitude to Coach Cotten for his years of dedicated service to our basketball program and his contributions to our community. Coach Cotten will remain on staff at Albertville High School, and we know that he will continue to make significant contributions to AHS in his role as a teacher," athletic director Matthew Lambert said in a statement.

"As we move forward, we are actively searching for qualified candidates for the position of girls basketball coach. Interested individuals can find the job posting on our website at www.albertk12.org or they can contact me at matthew.lambert@albertk12.org.”
