Big 7 Track and Field: State Meet Preview
This weekend, two Big 7 athletes, Sharyland Pioneer’s Angel Rodriguez and Sharyland High’s Callie Keith, will compete in the 2024 UIL 5A State Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas. The meet is unlike any other sporting event in the state. The competition showcases five-star recruits, Division-1 athletes, and future pros. Both athletes have earned the right to represent their schools on this prestigious stage, finishing inside the top two of their respective events at the Region IV 5A Track meet last weekend in San Antonio. After injuries plagued their 22-23 seasons, Keith and Rodriguez entered their off seasons re-energized and hungry; hoping for a chance to make things right. Now, they sit on the precipice of glory, awaiting the most important track meet of their lives.

The UIL High School baseball playoffs have finally arrived after months of anticipation. With a long and challenging regular season behind them, six Big 7 baseball teams will compete this weekend in the first round of the 2024 UIL State Playoffs for a bi-district championship. The state-ranked Palmview Lobos and powerhouse Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks lead the way as prohibitive favorites, while the La Joya Coyotes, Veterans Memorial Patriots, Sharyland Rattlers, and Mission Eagles all face staunch competition. Coyotes, Lobos, Diamondbacks advance to Area
Last week, Big 7 softball teams from La Joya ISD, Mission CISD, and Sharyland ISD competed in the bi-district round of the UIL state playoffs to crown winners and to advance to the Area round. Big 7 softball has been firing on all cylinders this year as these teams have now carved their way into their respective schools’ history books. Five softball teams from the Big 7 competed in the bi-district round, but only three came out on top. The Veterans Memorial Patriots and the Mission Eagles were eliminated in the first round while the La Joya Coyotes, Palmview Lobos, and Pioneer Diamondbacks advanced into the Area round with their bi-district championships. The next round of playoffs games is being played this week with some games being played last night and others being played tonight and tomorrow. These best-of-three series will determine who will continue their journey in the playoffs and whose stories will be coming to an end.
