Akron's mayor is getting hitched; Malik proposes to girlfriend during vacation in France

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and his girlfriend Alice Duey are getting married.

On Monday, the mayor announced via social media that he proposed while the two were in Paris together.

City spokeswoman Stephanie Marsh confirmed the engagement to the Beacon Journal on Monday just as the couple's post was hitting social media.

Malik issued a statement on the engagement via text message.

"As two folks born and raised in Akron, Alice and I are thrilled to share our love with this wonderful community that has supported both of us for so long," he wrote.

A photo included with the post shows Malik on bended knee on a riverboat on the Seine, gazing up at a smiling Duey with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

Akron residents showed an outpouring of support in the comments section, many of them offering their congratulations.

Carl Nelson wrote, "Great, now go fix some potholes! Seriously though, congratulations!"

Eddies Famous Cheesesteaks And Grille even reached out with a congratulatory message.

On his campaign's Facebook page Malik wrote, "Alice Duey, I love you forever and for always."
