Teen with fake gun who was shot by Akron officer charged

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – The 15-year-old boy who was shot by an Akron police officer who thought a toy gun he was carrying was real, is now being charged.

According to the Akron Police Department, 15-year-old Tavion Koonce-Williams is being charged with having a facsimile firearm, a first-degree misdemeanor that will be handled through juvenile court.

The City of Akron and the Akron Police Department released police body camera video of an officer shooting Koonce-Williams in Akron on April 1 .

The officer responded to a report of a man with a gun who was pointing it at houses.

According to the body camera video , Officer Ryan Westlake asked, “Where are you coming from? Can I see your hands?”

Koonce-Williams responded, saying, “It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s fake!”

Video shows the teen on the ground being handcuffed and bleeding from the shooting. Police later learned that the gun was indeed a fake.

“The officer’s file includes a number of disciplinary actions and use of force incidents, one of which has been deemed unreasonable,” the city said in a press release.

The officer is a nine-year veteran of the department and is now on paid administrative leave.

Koonce-Williams appeared in public for the first time as his family spoke out to the media, demanding answers and changes on April 12.
