$2M worth of drugs found in van after traffic stop in Fresno County
Authorities seized more than $2 million worth of drugs during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Fresno County earlier this month.The California Highway Patrol says when a minivan was pulled over on September 6th, the driver got out and ran into an orchard.Multiple agencies took part in an extensive search, but the driver was never found.Authorities then discovered 235 pounds of drugs bundled in around one hundred packages.If the suspect is found, they face several charges, including possession of methamphetamine for sale and resisting arrest.
Van Ness Village rallies around businesses impacted by fire

Pleasant Valley State Prison inmate who killed cellmate stuffed weapon in mattress: Investigator
15 years after an inmate was murdered at the Pleasant Valley State Prison, a Fresno County jury is now learning where investigators say the suspect stashed his weapon.Prosecutors have charged Marcus Faulk with one count of murder. Media reports from 2009 say Faulk killed his cellmate, Jason Shawn Cannon, who was 35 years old and serving a 32-month sentence for resisting arrest.On Thursday, jurors heard evidence about a prison-made weapon investigators found in Faulk's cell. Parts of the Valley woke up to thunder and rain on Thursday morning.The cooling temperatures are welcomed by many.But for farmers, too much rain during harvest season, which runs from August through September, can be harmful for raisins.Downpours can cause raisins to reabsorb water, and they can also embed sand in the crop."I was in that position last year and it's a horrible feeling. Man arrested for assaulting sleeping unhoused man in Tower District
The man suspected of assaulting an unhoused man as he slept outside of a Fresno Tower District business last month has been arrested.Detectives identified and arrested 25-year-old Roberto Felipe Olivera with the help of family on Wednesday.Detectives interviewed Olivera and then booked him into the Fresno County Jail for felony assault.The attack on the sleeping 47-year-old man happened in front of a business on Olive and Maroa avenues around 2 a.m. on August 26.Surveillance footage showed a man, now identified as Olivera, violently kicking the victim.A witness who reported the assault said Olivera then ran off down Olive Avenue.When officers arrived at the scene, they found him bleeding from the head with significant swelling.The man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment but has since been released.Fresno City Council Vice President Mike Karbassi put up $1,000 of his city budget to add to Valley Crime Stopper's $1,000 reward.Investigators say the release of the surveillance footage assisted in identifying Olivera as the suspect.

Man struck and killed on Highway 41 to Highway 180 interchange, CHP says
A man has died after being struck by a car on a central Fresno highway interchange.The California Highway Patrol says around 10:45 a.m. Thursday a man ran directly in front of a vehicle heading east on Highway 180.The driver was unable to stop and ultimately hit and killed the man.Officers say the victim was a displaced resident.The highway interchange is expected to be shut down for an hour as officers investigate.The driver remained on scene and is cooperating.
Siblings arrested in Tulare County for pimping and pandering, deputies say
A brother and sister have been arrested in Tulare County for pandering and pimping.27-year-old Enrique Reyes and 30-year-old Erika Reyes were taken into custody by investigators with the Tulare County District Attorney's Office in August following the service of several search warrants.The arrest stemmed from a tip about a massage business in Tipton that was allegedly operating a prostitution operation.A preliminary hearing in this case is set for later this month.
Construction underway on ice skating rink in Atwater ahead of holiday season
A popular holiday attraction is beginning to take shape in the North Valley.Construction is underway at The Old Town Skating Rink in Atwater.It'll be back for its fourth year at the Razzari Auto Centers ice skating rink on Cedar Avenue and Fourth Street.Crews are working to get the site ready for the community before its opening day on November 15.The final day of the season will be January 5, 2025.
Groundbreaking held for new park in Fresno's Tower District
Fresno city leaders were in a Central Fresno neighborhood on Wednesday to break ground on a brand new park.It's just a dirt field right now at the corner of Broadway and Elizabeth Streets in the Tower District.Soon, Broadway Parque will offer play structures for kids, two shade areas, paved pathways with lighting and water-wise irrigation.Families will also be able to gather at picnic tables.Construction should be completed in the late summer or early fall of 2025.
Fundraiser to help family of Clovis East student killed in crash
Clovis East High School hosted a fundraiser on Wednesday to help the family of a student who died in a motorcycle crash.Police say Austin Ly died when he was hit by a car and thrown from his bike at the intersection of Fowler and Tulare Avenues in east central Fresno.Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, where the 16-year old worked, provided the food for the fundraiser.Students also wrote letters to the grieving family.The line of students and staff waiting to buy food stretched across campus.All the money raised at the fundraiser will go to the Ly family as they deal with this tragic loss.

Bicyclist found dead near Fresno County intersection
A bicyclist was found dead near an intersection in Fresno County on Wednesday night.The discovery was made around 9:20 pm in the area of Elm and Laguna avenues.The California Highway Patrol originally said the bicyclist had died after being hit by a vehicle.The Fresno County Sheriff's Office has since clarified that the bicyclist was never hit, but instead died of natural causes.
