Barton Commissioner praises local law enforcement for response
Details emerged late Friday indicating a possible active-shooter situation at The Center for Counseling and Consultation in Great Bend was a false report. Law enforcement, however, did not know that as they responded to the situation. Tuesday morning, Barton County Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson, who owns Central Plains Security & Satellite Pros, commended officers for their response.
Barton County dispatchers gearing up for severe weather season
Severe weather season is upon Central Kansas and the Midwest. That was evidenced over the weekend with dozens of tornadoes reported from Texas to Nebraska and Iowa Friday and Saturday. Barton County Communications Director Dena Popp said area agencies continue finding new ways to deliver storm information to the public.
GBHS track reopening for joggers and walkers in early May
In November 2022, the USD 428 Board of Education approved the replacement of the track and turf at Great Bend High School's Memorial Stadium. The track has been largely closed to the public for exercise purposes since construction began last May. With all the pieces now in place and seasonal weather on the horizon, GBHS Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said the track will again be open for walking and jogging purposes in the next 7-10 days.
Farmers' Market, Senior Nutrition Program returning to Great Bend in May
The growing season is underway in Central Kansas. Some of that fresh produce will make its way to the Great Bend Summer Stroll Farmers' Market, a joint effort by the Barton County Health Department and city of Great Bend. Health Department Educator Katelyn Sigler said the first farmers' market will by Thursday, May 23 on the courthouse lawn.

Jordan running for third term as Barton County Treasurer
Barton County Treasurer Jim Jordan was first elected to his post in 2016, taking office in 2017. This week, Jordan announced he will be running for a third term in office. As of Thursday morning, Jordan is the lone Republican to file for the position ahead of the Aug. 6 primary election.
Pilot Club reminding community that May is Bike Safety Month
May is National Bike Safety Month, Spring and Summer increases the number of children and adults out on the roadways riding bikes for fun and exercise. The Pilot Club of Great Bend also known as the Helmet People, want to raise awareness, and remind riders and drivers of the need for greater caution and awareness on the roadways and streets. Pilot club encourages everyone to always wear a helmet when riding and certainly to make sure children wear helmets. Once again this May the Pilot club will participate in the Perfect Attendance Bike Program by properly fitting and giving away bike helmets to the USD 428 students who have perfect attendance and earned a new bike from generous local community sponsors and donations.
Lincoln sixth graders in Great Bend already planning for the future
Area seniors will be graduating from high school in a few short weeks. Many will go to college and some will begin new careers. At Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend, those decisions are being shaped early on. During last Thursday's USD 428 Board of Education luncheon at the school, Student and Family Advocate Jose Arias told the board about a career development program for sixth graders.
