As the wind flow shifts to the east, coming in off the cool Atlantic Ocean, temperatures will drop quickly from east to west. Highs in the mid-80s for the RVA Metro, dropping quickly into the 60s by early evening. Highs in the 70s for the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, cooling off quickly beginning midday. Warmer south and west of Petersburg, highs could reach the upper 80s before beginning to drop late afternoon. This front could trigger a spotty shower during the afternoon and evening. Emporia’s dark day: a lynching lost to history
One hundred and twenty-four years ago, Emporia orchestrated its first and only lynching. The event during which two men — one Black and one white — were hanged was unique to a small town facing a perceived threat, according to Ed Conner, a local man who had been determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fatal day. Conner presented the results of his research to the Emporia Rotary Club on Tuesday alongside his historical novel, “Cotton and O’Grady,” a fictional retelling based on the real event. Conner’s tale is told from the perspective of a third man involved in the crime spree who was always theorized but never confirmed.
