The spot, which is near Home Depot, Dude Donut City, Stop-N-Save market and Kelly's Furniture, is also the planned home of a mixed-use building with three apartment units above a retail commercial space. The Salem Police Department recently released an annual report revealing trends and changes in the number of homicides, aggravated assaults, burglaries and other crimes over the past 15 years. Last year, there were 10 homicides in Salem, a 15-year high for the city of nearly 180,000 residents. Violent crime overall has increased by 35% since 2009 in Salem, while property crime has declined by 3% over the same time period.

Cesar Yovanni Alvarez-Alcazar, 20 at the time of the crime, was handed down a life sentence on Tuesday for the murder of Jose Angel Rodriguez-Sanchez during a house party in Cornelius two years ago; this decision coming from a jury's verdict which held Alvarez-Alcazar guilty of escalating an argument to fatal violence, as KOIN reported.
