Gearing up for Spencer’s second Annual Showdown June 29
To honor a fallen friend, brother and son that lost his life at a young age, loved ones of Spencer Hughes are continuing a treasured tradition in his memory. Hughes was affected by a rare genetic developmental disorder known as Williams Syndrome, which affects many parts of the body. As a result, he dealt with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, surgeries and cardiovascular problems throughout his life. Yet, Spencer overcame all of those obstacles and made a difference in the world with his unique personality, bright smile, resiliency and care for others. He passed away peacefully at age 21 on December 7, 2022.
Godfrey couple thanks first responders
Godfrey couple Andy and Shirley Zirkelbach, 90 and 88 respectively, visited Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick’s office Wednesday morning to extend their thanks to the first responders who came to their rescue on May 15 th, 2024, when the deck on their home collapsed. Madison County Deputy Sheriff Sydnie Williams was able to kick down the door of their home to gain access to the couple.
PRIDE Pop-up at Alton City Hall
In celebration of Pride Month, the design committee of Alton Main Street and the board of Alton Pride joined forces to create a temporary pop-up art installation in front of Alton City Hall. Staff and visitors were surprised Wednesday morning by a festive “flock” of bright pink flamingos and vibrant rainbow steps.
APD identify victim in alleged domestic attack
Tributes to the memory of an Alton man who died following what has been described as a “domestic-related death” have been flooding social media all weekend. Now he has been officially identified by Alton Police as 68-year-old Roadecker D. Watts. Watts died after first responders found him and another man in the front yard of a house in the 200 block of W. 19th Street just after 3am on Friday.

Commission says "yes" and "no" to shelter proposals
The Alton Plan Commission heard from some in favor of and many against the plan to build a homeless shelter, referred to as “short-term temporary housing” by the Salvation Army, at Tuesday’s Alton City Plan Commission meeting. A packed room took turns speaking in front of the board, which eventually decided to send opposing recommendations to the full city council.
