Man accused of burglarizing market and trying to break into an ATM machine arrested
EUGENE, Ore. – A 44-year-old man who is accused of breaking into an ATM machine at a local market was arrested early on Tuesday, according to the Eugene Police Department. EPD officials said they responded at 2:29 a.m. on April 30 to a reported burglary in progress at the 13th Avenue Market in the 400 block of West 13th Avenue. Responding officers arrived and spotted the suspect, identified as Joseph Patrick Woods, 44, through the store’s front windows as he was trying to break into an ATM machine, police said. Authorities said that Woods went into hiding once he noticed that police had arrived. A K9 unit and drone operator were dispatched to the scene and officers determined that Woods had locked himself in a bathroom in the back of the store, Eugene police said. EPD officials said that after Woods refused to respond to officers’ commands to exit the bathroom, pepper spray was deployed into the bathroom. Woods then came out and was arrested, police said. Eugene police officials said that the doors to the building and two ATM machines were damaged.
