Each time, students and parents convinced the school board to save his position. But in 2017, amidst financial crisis in the district,...

Op-Ed: Even with an increase in wages, the new meal plan is not worth it
In December of 2023, Grinnell College students received an email informing them of a shift in meal plan options for the 2024-25 academic year. As it stands, the full meal plan next semester will come in at a whopping $8,964 for students in traditional dorm housing. For off campus or apartment style housing, students are also given the option to pay $3,702 for 200 meals a year, or a little less than 7 meals a week. In their email to the student body the college claimed to be considering “issues of health, wellness, nutrition, and food insecurity”. These options are not adequate, and do not accomplish the goals outlined by the college.

Op-Ed: To preserve civil rights, the left must appeal to the middle
You may have heard the popular slogan — “If you’re not afraid, you’re not paying attention.” It’s true — we, as a nation, as a community and as individuals, are under attack from the far right. Since most Grinnell students agree that there is such a threat, I will be brief — Many of our country’s citizens have adopted a far-right ideology which limits the definition of humanity to something far narrower and crueler than its natural meaning. They are choosing their leaders accordingly. As a result, the civil rights of many identity groups have been threatened or outright carved away. As citizens of this country and of the world, as members of a community and a family and for many of us, as targets of the far right ourselves, we must not allow our freedoms, our loved ones, or our lives to be taken from us — we must fight back.
Honor G logo to be removed from athletic gear and uniforms
Grinnell athletic administration has informed teams that they cannot print Grinnell College’s “Honor G” logo on any new gear until further notice, according to head men’s soccer coach Brian Jaworski and head women’s soccer coach Kirsten Koester. The logo has drawn comparisons to the German Iron Cross, a symbol used by Nazi Germany and, more recently, white nationalists.
