Great Bend PD: False report prompts police response, area lockdown
GREAT BEND, Kan. (KWCH) - Update: The Great Bend Police Department confirmed a false call led to a heavy response that prompted an area lockdown, impacting Lincoln Elementary School. A little after 4 p.m., the school reported that the “all-clear” was given and students were being dismissed. That lockdown lasted less than an hour.
Couple able to 'Brew with a Brewmaster' in Great Bend
In the spirit of community and charity, Dry Lake Brewing stepped up at the 18th Annual Sunflower Diversified Services Charity Gala. They offered a "Brew with a Brewmaster" package, which granted an experience to not only brew a beer but to leave a personal stamp by naming it and taking home a growler of their very own creation.
Great Bend preschool getting more colorful as it nears completion
Following a luncheon at Lincoln Elementary School Thursday, members of the USD 428 Board of Education took a tour of the new Little Panthers Preschool and District Education Center at 1809 24th Street. Much progress has been made on the building ahead of an open house scheduled for Aug. 1. Superintendent Khris Thexton has been pleased with the progress and outcome.
Tuesday threat at Ellinwood school deemed not credible
Many Ellinwood Middle and High School students were absent from class Wednesday following alleged threats made by a classmate on Tuesday. USD 355 Superintendent Ben Jacobs could not comment specifically on the matter but did release a message to parents and the public about the matter. The message was also posted on the Ellinwood Public Schools Facebook page where it elicited more than 100 comments.

Penka retiring after 39 years with Co-op in Great Bend
Matt Penka began his co-op career with the American Plains Co-op in Great Bend in 1985. The Vice President of Grain announced his retirement after 39 years. A retirement reception will take place Friday, April 26 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Great Bend main office.
Lady Panther takes two more from Garden City
Thursday's softball games at the Great Bend Sports Complex were moved by more than two hours to beat potential storms. Yet the Lady Panthers created a storm of their own with a 16-run third inning in game one to end things early 17-1. Great Bend completed the sweep with a 12-0 win in the late game.

Barton Co. Treasurer: Groundwater assessment is not a tax
Barton County Treasurer Jim Jordan thought all was going well after the county sent out tax statements with corrected mill levies. Then his office began receiving calls with questions about a special assessment from Big Bend Ground Water Management No. 5 (GMD5). Jordan said even though the assessment is on property tax statements, it is not a tax and it applies to all parcels of land in the GMD5 district. It has appeared on tax statements every year since 1976.

Arctic Fox passes away at Great Bend zoo
From the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo... We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved Arctic Fox, Todd. At 13 years old, he well surpassed the life expectancy of a wild fox, which is only 3-5 years. Todd has lived at the zoo since 2013. Prior to coming to the zoo, he was part of the pet trade and unfortunately his diet was not appropriate and caused him lifelong health issues.
