His dad, Don Smith, was the publisher of The Pilot-Independent from 1978 to 1985. April 15-20 Wolf of the Week: Gavin Swanson
The first Wolf of the Week spring honoree is Gavin Swanson, varsity baseball. Gavin batted 8-12 (0.667) with eight runs scored and five RBI. He also pitched five innings giving up zero runs, striking out nine batters, and only allowing one hit. Gavin is also a strong student in the classroom with honor roll recognition each quarter this year. Congratulations Gavin, and keep up the great work on and off the diamond.

Leech Lake Ice-Out Contest winner
Jonathan Gustafson won the kayak and paddle donated by Walker Bay Dock during The Pilot-Independent’s 21st annual Leech Lake Ice-Out Contest. Gustafson was one of 40 people who correctly guessed April 12. There were 841 people who entered the contest and 21 prizes given away. Dawn Premo benefit is May 16
A Come Show Love For Dawn Premo Benefit will be held May 18, 1-4 p.m., at Pike Bay Town Hall, 15514 Hwy. 371, Cass Lake. This benefit will help defray medical costs for Dawn, due to her Stage 2 lung cancer diagnosis. She is currently being treated at Joe Lueken Cancer Center with chemo, radiation and immunotherapy. There will be a silent auction, bake sale, serving fry bread tacos and an ice cream social.

Oratory Contest winner speaks at Legion
Minnesota Legion Oratorical Contest winner Elijah Cox was the speaker at the Walker Legion Membership dinner. He delivered his winning contest presentation to the Legion members who were very impressed with this young man’s delivery. Cox, a sophomore, will be competing May 17-19 in Hillsdale, Mich., at Hillsdale College in the Legion National Oratorical Contest.
Flag retirement in Laporte May 8 at Vets Memorial
The In Country veterans group and the American Legion and Auxiliary of Laporte are sponsoring a flag retirement at the Laporte Veteran Memorial downtown May 8 at 10 a.m. Fifth-grade students at Laporte School are invited. In the past each student deposited a flag into the flames. Jim Smith spoke about respect for the flag. In the past it was quite impressive; the students were very interested and learned about respect for the flag. If it is raining the event will be scheduled for the next day.
