Brewster Police Develop Strategic Plan
BREWSTER – Every Police Department should have a strategy. Thanks to work by Ostman Business Strategy, a consulting firm run by John Ostman, the Brewster Police Department now has one. Brewster Police Chief Heath Eldredge now has 48 strategies to implement, with 19 objectives, five strategic goals, 157 action plans all under one overarching vision.

Study Lays Out Vision For Recreation Fields
ORLEANS – All the recreation advisory committee wanted was lighting for an outdoor basketball court near Nauset Regional Middle School. Tracy Murphy, the committee’s chair, recalled to the select board April 24 that the project was one of the first initiatives the committee undertook upon its formation in 2019. But while Community Preservation Act money was secured for a design study, she said the project proved “unworkable” due to issues with the site’s topography and future plans to sewer the property.
Committee Rejects Lifting Shellfish Grant Prohibition
CHATHAM – There is one private aquaculture grant in town, and it’s likely to remain that way, at least for the time being. After a lengthy discussion, members of the shellfish advisory committee last week agreed to table a proposal to repeal the section of the town’s shellfish regulations which prohibit private grants.
At La Bella Vita, Dogs Are Having Their Day
ORLEANS – La Bella Vita has gone to the dogs, or at least a portion of it. The board of health on April 18 unanimously approved a variance allowing the restaurant, located on Academy Place across from Veterans Memorial Park, to provide pet-friendly seating outside on its front patio.

Massachusetts man sentenced for organizing Northeast Kingdom drug ring
Burlington, VT- A Massachusetts man was sentenced to nearly 8 years in prison for selling cocaine and fentanyl in the Northeast Kingdom. Juan Carlos Ortiz, 29, from Springfield, MA, had previously pleaded guilty to the charges of selling drugs between November 2021 and August 2022 under a plea agreement. According to court records, Ortiz organized a group of 13 people in a drug-distributing network that sold mostly in the Northeast Kingdom, including Orleans, Essex, and Caledonia Counties.

We’re looking at highs in the 70s for the day. A southwest breeze will keep the South Coast, Cape and Islands quite a bit cooler. We’ll see another sun and clouds mixture with the slight chance for a spot shower in eastern MA during the day and evening (peak chance late afternoon). Most of the rain will remain focused over central and northern New England as a disturbance tracks south and east across the region and eventually towards the ocean
4 seriously hurt when boat capsizes off Cape Cod
HYANNIS – A boat capsized off of Cape Cod late Saturday night, leaving one person in critical condition at a Massachusetts hospital.It happened around 11:30 p.m. in the area of Point Gammon off the Hyannis coast.According to the Hyannis Fire Department, the crew called to report the vessel was taking on water.Sea Tow made it to the boat, but while preparing to bring the vessel back to shore, it capsized.All four people who were on the boat plunged into the water.The operator of Sea Tow pulled all four boaters from the water, and began to tow the vessel while the U.S. Coast Guard was notified.Once back to land, the four people from the boat were rushed to Cape Cod Hospital.According to the Hyannis Fire Department, one person was in critical condition and the three others were in serious condition.
