CARTERET COUNTY — A Carteret County mother-daughter duo received top state 4-H Alumni Awards on April 27 during a celebration held in the McKimmon Center in Raleigh. Kim Nead of Newport was inducted into the NC 4-H Hall of Fame, which recognizes 4-H volunteers, NC Cooperative Extension professionals, staff, employees, donors and others who have made a significant impact on the 4-H program. It also recognizes 4-H members through the contribution of time, energy, financial resources and more at the local or state level.
POLICE: Bicyclist struck and killed in Carteret County crash
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Authorities say a bicyclist has died after a crash on Saturday morning in Newport in Carteret County. According to Captain John Filson with the Newport Fire Department, the person was struck and killed on Highway 70 westbound at Roberts Road. He says accident is under investigation.
School board to hold closed session May 2 to consider personnel matter
BEAUFORT — The Carteret County Board of Education (BOE) will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 to consider a personnel matter in closed session. The meeting will be in the school system’s central offices on Safrit Drive in Beaufort. Other than opening and closing in open session, the meeting will be held in closed session pursuant to NC General Statute 115C-318.11(a)(6). No action other than calling the meeting to order, and later adjourning is expected in open session, according to a meeting notice sent by the school system’s administrative office.

Ceremony dedicates the Charters of Freedom monument at Carteret County Courthouse
BEAUFORT - On April 27 at 302 Courthouse Square in Beaufort, a ceremony was held from 11 a.m. to noon to dedicate the recently installed Charters of Freedom. The event honored the permanent display of full-scale replicas of the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence, which are permanently engraved on bronze plates and housed inside a brick structure. Foundation Forward Inc., a nonprofit educational organization with headquarters in North Carolina, made them possible.
