SPRINGFIELD — Kate Kreider and Brett Albert named their shop Rumspringa Books as a nod to a period of adolescence and exploration. As the only members of their family who’ve left Manheim, much less the rest of their native Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Kreider says her 95-year-old grandfather jokes that she and Albert are on a permanent rumspringa.

But at Flayvors of Cook Farm in Hadley, the phone calls mark a ramp-up to one of the ice cream shop’s most popular traditions — ice cream made with real locally grown asparagus, lovingly known as “Hadley Grass” in Western Mass.
